Our relatives must have missed the boat when Leif Erickson and Christopher Columbus set sail. We may have missed the boat on other occasions, too. Explorers and settlers sailed across the Atlantic to reach the New World. The people that had walked over earlier were well established on this continent when Leif and Chris arrived. The Bering Strait land bridge may have been closed to foot traffic about ten thousand years earlier.
For the past five hundred years folks have just kept coming to the Americas. We are a hemisphere of European, African, Eurasian, Scandinavian, Asian and Mediterranean stock. However, regardless of when we came here and how we got here, each and every one of us has a common ancestor who walked upright out of Africa in the dawn of human time. The real saga of human migration plays out over many thousands of years.
